Festival Week from

The Festival Week is the high point of the Anniversary Year. The week’s festivities will kick off with a concert and fireworks display on June 16 at 8:30 p.m. on the University Square. Admission is free. The fireworks will begin at dusk. The Neckarstaden/B37 will offer the best view of the display. This evening is the start of many other highlights over the course of the week, from the ceremonial reopening of the New University and the University Mile to the awarding of the Lautenschlaeger Research Award to alumni events to the grand jubilee ball.

 

June 25 Ceremonial Reopening of the New University

Great Hall, New University
The ceremonial reopening of the completely renovated and modernized New University will be held in its new Great Hall (Aula). Guests from all over the world will attend. Theresia Bauer, Baden-Württemberg’s Minister of Science, Research and the Arts, is expected to attend the event as a substitute for Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann.

June 25 UniMeile
11:00 a.m.
Old University, New University, University Square
All over the University Square, the doors and portals of all university buildings will be open to the public, as will their inner courtyards and squares. Heidelberg University’s many subjects, faculties and institutions will present their research findings and new innovations in teaching. A number of hands-on events will be part of a diverse programme of events on the UniMeile, making it something for visitors of all ages.

Marstallhof
All visitors to the UniMeile, as well as all members and friends of the university, are invited to conclude their day in the historic Marstallhof’s inner court at the Anniversary Party, which will feature live music and dancing.

June 26 Ecumenical Service
10:00 a.m.
Peterskirche
Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Huber, former bishop of Berlin-Brandenburg and chairman of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), will deliver the sermon during the festival’s ecumenical service. The liturgy will be celebrated by the chairman of the German Bishops Conference, Archbishop Dr. Robert Zollitsch (Freiburg), and Prof. Dr. Helmut Schwier, University Minister at Heidelberg’s Peterskirche.

June 27 Awarding of the Prize of the Deutsche Nationalstiftung

The National Prize honors those who have dedicated themselves to enhancing the growing unity among European nations and Germany’s place among them. The 2011 prize will be awarded in Heidelberg.

The cities of Heidelberg and Montpellier will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the partnership between the university and the cities. An exhibit showing the German-French partnership will be on display alongside presentations on the shared history of the cities.

July 2 Junior Researchers Meet Nobel Laureates

Heidelberg University has invited all Nobel Laureats in Medicine and Physiology to travel up from Lindau on the Bodensee, where they will be meeting, to participate in a symposium with junior researchers working at Heidelberg University to discuss scientific research and their careers.

July 2 Heidelberg University Summer Night: Grand Ball in Honor of the University’s Anniversary
